Artist Statement " When I was younger, I used to love magic, I thought for sure I would become a magician. I remember checking out books from the school library on the subject, hoping that one day I would be able to make a successful illusion. I tried all the tricks in the book, the disappearing handkerchief to the floating baton. I was never successful at the art of trickery, but it never stopped me from loving and enjoying magic. " The desire to make magic is still within me. Only this time I’m creating the illusion of life through my artwork. "The things I find interesting are people’s emotional expressions and physical features. Therefore, I include many expressions and moods in my work. The mediums I find most effective for making this happen are graphite and oil paint. The two have been very useful in helping me develop my artistic vocabulary. " What it comes down to is this. I love what I do! Art is in my blood and I’m here to create. " I know how I feel when I’m making art, 'It’s almost like sitting with God.' It’s true what they say, 'when you love what you’re doing it doesn’t feel like work.' " When you look at my art I hope you enjoy what you see, because I’ve enjoyed what I’ve created. Thanks for sharing your time with me and may peace be with you. " Oronde Kairi |
About the Artist "Breathing life into the canvas, only to take your breath away with his masterpieces of orginal realism, splashed with creativity, Oronde Kairi is an artist of undeniable talent. Born on May 1, 1975 in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia , PA, he showcases an artistic eye accompanied by a skillful stroke of the brush. Kairi truly has the power to depict life in ways that give new definition to beauty and expression with his own flair. He began his journey of becoming an artist with the teachings and mentorship of Dawud Anyabwile, creator of the hit comic book, "Brother Man: Dictator of Discipline." Kairi attended Saturday art and computer classes given by Anyabwile and his brother, in the back of their storefront. Becoming serious about his skills as an artist, Kairi went on to the Art Institute of Phildelphia and then to the University of the Arts, where he received his BFA in illustration. With pieces such as " New Orleans Rising" and "Night Howler," overflowing with jazzy overtones, this artist in his prime reveals his ability to paint with the ear of a musician, the soul of a poet, and the imagination of a great storyteller. Prized paintings inspired by music, friends, family, politics, and more simply- life, Kairi is an everyman's artist. Featured in numerous events including: The West Oak Lane Jazz fest , The Royal Treatment Inc Presents: Emerging Artists from Phildelphia, October Gallery First Friday, the October Gallery Art Expo, the New York Art Expo, as well as having some of his art work appear on BET's Rap City and Philadephia's Urban Xpressions, Kairi is becoming more than just a household name. Recently, he has also been praised in Paint Magazine, The October Gallery story (Conecting people with Art) and the Writer Blocks Newspaper for his rapid take over in the art world. From earth tones, to soft textures, to warm hues, to alluring shadows, Kairi truly owns his crafts, perfecting and nurturing his gift relentlessly. Humble by nature, Oronde Kairi's art sings boldy the tales of an enduring talent destined for success." Young and Gifted! by Dawud Anyabwile, Creator/Illustrator of Brotherman Comics "I first meet Oronde Kairi Johnson in 1995 where he was a student of my neighborhood art class. I remember him telling me that he was considering joining the military and apparently he found that his love for art took a priority over the previous decision. What I liked about Oronde was his desire to learn, his punctuality and dedication to his craft. The progression of his work was inspiring because Oronde picked up on techniques very quickly. This did not surprise me because he wasn't afraid to ask questions and he was always practicing to perfect these skills. |

" From my experiences I have encountered many exceptional artist who possess unbelievable skills, but the artist that stand out in my mind are the ones who's personalities display some level of integrity, discipline and humility. These qualities were evident in Oronde's persona which removed all doubt in my mind that this brother was destined for greatness. I lost touch with Oronde after I left Philadelphia and have not seen his work again until very recently and I was blown away by his progress. I was also proud of the fact that he has not only improved his technique, but has received his degree from art school. To see a young brother such as Oronde reach for his dreams has given me hope that a lot of other young talent out there can do the same. I am glad to have had the opportunity to meet Oronde and look forward to seeing him set new standards and trends in the field of art." |
